Human hair is fairly easy to care for. Make sure the band holding the hair together is tight. You may consider adding your own. I have tried squirting glue into the end, but with limited success.

Brush carefully, you don't want to pull any hairs out. Get a spray bottle, and spritz water on your pony, to lubricate it, and help detangle. If needed, use a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. I find that "body fluids" can be wiped off with a towel, allowed to dry, then brushed off without the need for washing.
