Been a long time since I've posted anything here, but when I saw the DJF thread, I just had to chime in...
Back in the late 70's, I worked for a commuter airline that flew out of Dallas and Houston. One day in probably 1977 or 1978, I was working the gate at IAH when I looked up to see my dream girl coming around the corner. She walked up to the counter and asked to check in for her flight to Beaumont. Needless to say, I was almost lost for words. But I did manage to introduce myself and tell her I was a big fan... and to see that incredible hair in person would be a memory for life (and it has been!)So after I caught my breath and watched that hair swaying as she walked across the concourse and took a seat, the other gate agent and I chatted it up as to how lucky were were that day. Of course, this is way before cell phones so no picture with her. (damn!)So we're working the other flights and I notice there are two guys hovering like flies around her, and I could see the look on her face was one of annoyance. So I sauntered across the room to where she was sitting and said... Excuse me fellas... Ms. Fondren?...we have a message from Beaumont for you over at the gate... would you mind coming over for a moment and see if you need to reply? She said... why thank you, yes, I'll come. So as I walked with her across the room, I said... You looked like you needed a little help... and she said yes, thank you so much...I said there's really no message, but if you'd care to wait in our office, we'd be grateful to accommodate you. She said that would be wonderful. So for the 30 minutes till her flight boarded, my co-worker and I took turns checking in other passengers and going in the office to sit and talk with her. To this day, I remember how "hard" it was to not have my obvious excitement noticed. She was gracious and sweet and gave us each a thank you kiss as she headed for the plane. What a memory!
