I couldn't agree more that every one of these women should be respected for their choice. It's their body. It's just sad to see someone fall out of love with their hair.
I'm going to hit on a point here that may help explain why some people get so upset. Especially when the return-fire comment is "if you want long hair, grow it yourself" - socially that is all but impossible for those of us who are men in the professional western world. Appearance counts for a lot, and while many of us would love nothing more than to let our own hair grow to the lengths we see these beautiful women attaining, we simply can't, not if we value our careers. It's a sad fact.
So when I see someone else with such long hair, at least for me, I think, wow, it must feel so incredible to have that be a part of your body. It's something I can never have, unless I date a woman with it (and then it's still not mine, just closer). But that option is incredibly rare, and not the reason to date someone anyway.
